 BIO International Convention

BIO International Convention 2013 - Chicago

“Chicago has hosted two successful and exciting BIO International Conventions, in 2006 and 2010, and we are thrilled to bring the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry back to the windy city and the Midwest,” said Jim Greenwood, President and CEO of BIO, producer of the BIO International Convention. “The Convention showcases the biotechnology industry within the host city and region – Chicago and the Midwest are home to a vibrant and flourishing biotech hub, which set a strong example for the entire industry.”

Monsanto’s big plans could have a big ripple effect on the region’s economy.

The agribusiness giant’s announcement April 23rd that it intends to hire 675 people and spend $400 million upgrading its Chesterfield research facility is the kind of thing, economic development experts say, will help cement St. Louis’ place as a global hub of plant science, while also trickling down to restaurants and stores in the Chesterfield Valley.

For a decade, the region has been working to build up its food science business, touting the resources at Monsanto and other area companies, and research from Washington University.

St. Louis has come a long way, said Kelly Gillespie, president of Missouri Biotechnology Association. But this sort of splash from an industry icon is a big vote of confidence.

“It’s huge,” Gillespie said, and he notes that the research Monsanto will be conducting here, into biologics and data-driven farming technology, is in a sweet spot for the industry right now. “The science they’re working on is second-generation-plus.”

That will help attract world-class talent to St. Louis, said Joe Reagan, president of the St. Louis Regional Chamber. The Chamber is launching a push to bolster the skills of the region’s workforce, and projects such as this one will help to bring in, and train, top-notch workers up and down the spectrum.
