BETSY BOEDEKER

Senior Research Scientist, CRO Coordinator
BioBench Contract Research Organization

Ms. Boedeker has been with St. Louis Community College (STLCC) since November 2009.  She oversees all aspects of the Contract Research Organization (CRO) established at the Center for Plant and Life Sciences (CPLS) located at Bioresearch and Development Growth (BRDG) Park.  This might include working with Biotechnology program students or staff members to complete contracted work, assisting CPLS laboratory clients, troubleshooting instrumentation, or helping high school students working within CPLS define the scope of their experimental work.

Ms. Boedeker has a Master’s degree in molecular biology from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, where she completed her own independent research on an insecticide resistant strain of the house fly Musca domestica.  She has many years laboratory experience working at Washington University School of Medicine in various departments, 4 years as a forensic biologist and DNA analyst with the Illinois State Police in Chicago and nearly 10 years as a senior research and development scientist with Sigma Aldrich (now Millipore Sigma).

Ms. Boedeker started teaching as an adjunct faculty member in the biotechnology program in 2004, initially designing and teaching a specialized topics course in forensics. She remains adjunct faculty, and enjoys teaching various program courses and interacting with the biotechnology students.  By her interactive relationship with industry in the St. Louis region, she is able to place the majority of students with companies for their workplace learning experience, and is delighted that about 30% of the time, this leads to full time employment directly from that placement.

When she is not working, she enjoys pottery, stamping and card making.  She also spends time training her two mixed breed dogs, Mathilda (12) and Oliver (6) or competing with them at local AKC-sanctioned dog agility trials.
