Associate Vice Chancellor, Economic Development and CEO
University of Missouri and Missouri Innovation Center




William M. (Bill) Turpin serves as the Interim Associate Vice Chancellor for Economic Development at the University of Missouri, and as the President and CEO of the Missouri Innovation Center (MIC).  Bill leads three main areas of the Economic Development division at MU:  Technology Advancement, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and Industry Engagement.  He also works with faculty, students and local entrepreneurs to start and grow technology-based companies.  MIC operates the MU Life Science Business Incubator with over 20 clients commercializing new technologies in areas such as medical devices, pharmaceuticals, animal health, agriculture and alternative energy.   

Bill has more than 30 years of experience as a serial entrepreneur. Over the course of his career, he has identified and led the market in significant technology shifts, including Windows, the Internet and 3D virtual worlds. One of his startups pioneered the use of dynamically created web pages and invented the JavaScript programming language. He has been the founding CEO of four startups and a senior executive at respected public companies including Netscape and Borland.

In 2014, Bill returned to Columbia to share his experience with promising entrepreneurs through the Missouri Innovation Center and build on the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Mid Missouri. To date, he has been instrumental in seventeen startups through the Innovation Center.

Bill also currently serves on the Lt. Governor’s Blue Ribbon panel to study the Missouri Hyperloop Coalition project.  Bill has a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Missouri and an Executive MBA from the University of Texas.
